    Kieran McKenna statement

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, who was linked with a Manchester United return expressed his joy after signing a new deal with the Tractor Boys.

I am extremely proud to have signed a new contract with the Club.

We have enjoyed incredible success together over the last two seasons and I’m excited to have the opportunity and responsibility of leading this fantastic Club into its first season in the Premier League in 22 years.

Preparation and planning for the challenge ahead has been ongoing since we won promotion at the beginning of May, with plenty of work still to do before the start of the new season at what is such an exciting time for everyone at the Club.

I am so happy to have committed my future to taking the next step with Ipswich Town and am really excited for what's ahead as we continue this journey together.

    Ken to paper

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna has signed a new four-year deal with the Tractor Boys.

McKenna will stay with the newly-promoted Premier League club until 2028 after receiving interest from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea in recent weeks.

McKenna, who has guided his team to back-to-back promotions, had been eyed as a possible replacement for Erik ten Hag at United where he previously worked as an assistant coach.

But the 38-year-old's new deal puts an end to speculation that he could fill Ten Hag's void in the Manchester dugout should the Dutchman get sacked.

    Man Utd almost signed Kroos

Manchester United had the chance to sign Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos back in 2014.

As soon as he took on mission impossible – following Sir Alex Ferguson – David Moyes made getting the then Bayern Munich star Kroos to Old Trafford his No1 priority.

And a meeting with the midfielder as well as his wife Jessica went so well that the German told Moyes he’d be happy to swap Munich for Manchester.

Kroos admitted so himself, a couple of years ago, when he said: “When we broke up, I had verbally agreed to do it. So yes, it was close - I almost went to United.”

Moyes was naturally bouncing at the thought as he knew exactly what it would mean to have one of the world’s finest playmakers calling the shots in the United engine room.

Some well-regarded footballing figures believe – admittedly with the benefit of hindsight – signing the Germany international could have been as pivotal a moment in Old Trafford history as Eric Cantona.

Moyes and the Red Devils never got the chance to find out as the Scot was sacked in April and when Kroos would have been packing his bags for England, he was flying to Spain instead.

Even though Louis van Gaal – the man who had made him a regular at Bayern – was now in charge, Carlo Ancelotti had convinced him that Real was a better option.

    Sir Jim Ratcliffe advice

Looking to the future, here is a radical tip for Sir Jim [Ratcliffe] if he wants to save cash and get [Manchester] United back to the top . . . go back to The Cliff.

United’s old training ground which still exists, albeit in a rather dilapidated state.

Get the modern-day stars — who require the most up-to-date technology, pitches, pampering and a swimming pool to get the best out of them — to toughen up.

Show them where Sir Matt Busby laid the foundations of United’s success — and Sir Alex Ferguson built an empire.

Tell the new boss that if Fergie could plot the Treble from a c**p little office in a building that resembles a council-run sports centre, it is good enough for them.

    Man Utd coach contract

Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy revealed his contract expires next month and his future is up in the air amid uncertainty over whether manager Erik ten Hag will remain.

I don't know if I'm going to stay or leave. I learned a lot at Man United working with Erik, he's one of the smartest managers I've known.

My contract ends in June. If the club wants me to continue in this role, I would be grateful. That would be great.

I love my role, I love working for Manchester United, but the desire to be a manager, to be the person in charge is still there.

    Why Sancho didn't apologise

Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy has lifted the lid on why Jadon Sancho refused to apologise to manager Erik ten Hag.

If you’re from the streets, no one wants to apologise. You admit you are not training well, you are lazy, everything you are accused of. Jadon wasn’t going to have that.

The manager has a strong character and just said that all he wants is an apology. Jadon thought that he had done nothing wrong.

He didn't see why he had to apologise. Sometimes you have to apologise, because a player will never win against a manager.

I spoke to Jadon as a coach, as a mentor, as a friend, and as someone who grew up on the streets and knows the code.

But Jadon just wasn’t seeing it. He said, 'I ain’t apologising because if I do, I’m apologising for being lazy, always being late, not giving my best – that’s what I’m apologising for'. Those were his reasons.

I spoke to the manager and I said to him that you know the delicacy, and I think Jadon feels that if he apologises then he's going to be classed as someone who doesn't train hard, doesn't work hard, that everything that was said against him was true.

    Lion in wait

Manchester United chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe is in pole position to make Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite his first signing in a cut-price £40million move.

Ratcliffe is ready to take advantage of the Toffees' dire financial situation by landing Branthwaite for a bargain £40million fee.

The Merseysiders are in desperate need of cash to stay afloat once their ill-fated £500m takeover bid by 777 Partners is officially scrapped.

It means Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is likely to have no choice but to take what he gets for any of his players.

And the Premier League giants could end up selling Branthwaite for half his £80m valuation.

Hojlund assesses first season in England

Rasmus Hojlund has spoken about his debut season in the Premier League.

The Manchester United star came under a lot of scrutiny in the first half of the campaign, but managed to finish the season with 10 goals and two assists in the league.

Speaking to Danish outletTipsbladet, he said: "It took me some time to get started in the Premier League, but I think I have come on really well since then. I feel I have found my rhythm.

"It was frustrating leading up to my first goal in the Premier League because I felt there was a lot of focus on it and more energy could have been spent on the fact that I was top scorer in the Champions League [at the time].

"But, of course, I agree it is not very impressive to go 14 Premier League games without scoring your first goal, but I felt I had some bad luck in the league games. Fortunately, it got better.

"When I scored against Aston Villa, I felt like the curse had been lifted a bit. It was a good day because I scored my first goal and we beat a really good team."

Fans fear Garnacho will miss start of season

Manchester United fans are concerned that star winger Alejandro Garnacho could miss the start of next season.

Garnacho, who was a standout player for United last season, has already been called up to the Argentina national squad for the Copa America this summer.

The teenager will join Lionel Scaloni's squad for the tournament which is being held in the USA and gets underway on June 20.

The competition will then run until July 14 when Garnacho would normally be expected to have a short break before returning to Manchester to begin pre-season training with the Red Devils.

However, that may not be the case for the FA Cup winning hero who, according to TNT Sports Argentina, has been called up to the Argentina squad for the Olympics immediately after.

Should Argentina go all the way to the final then they would see their Olympic campaign run from July 25 through to August 9.

The late finish would almost certainly mean that after a recovery break, Garnacho would return to Manchester United after the Premier League season had restarted on August 17.
