ABC’s Modern Family is one of the most popular sitcoms to have ever existed in the history of pop culture. The beloved show, which aired over 250 episodes and 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020, bagged an impressive 22 Emmys along the ride and for good reason.
The relatable sitcom followed the lives of three households in the extended Pritchett family and has been a fan favourite since its premiere.
Starring an ensemble cast including Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen and Sofía Vergara, the show concluded its final season in 2020 and speculations about a potential reunion or revival have been rife since then. Recently, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who portrayed Mitchell Pritchett on the show, added fuel to the fire about a possible Modern Family reboot by sharing a photo of the show’s set on his Instagram Story.
According to TV Insider, in a June 2024 interview on CBS’ The Talk, Ferguson addressed the rumours surrounding a Modern Family reunion. While he joked about the unintended consequences of his social media post, he remained tight-lipped about any concrete plans for a reboot. Nevertheless, his cryptic comments about “something” happening have only added to the speculation.

‘Modern Family’ reunion: Is a reboot on the cards?
Jesse Tyler Ferguson talked about the picture he had shared on his Instagram featuring some of the cast members in the interview. Ferguson mentioned he was on the set with some of his cast mates, but he clarified that it wasn’t for a reboot or a movie. However, he expressed his excitement about fans’ enthusiasm and mentioned that he would love to do a reboot and even hinted that something might be coming soon.
“That was on the set, and yes, we’re doing a sequel,” Ferguson joked, adding, “I’m just kidding. I know, it’s something I can’t really talk about, isn’t that annoying? I know. I was on the set with some of my castmates. It’s not a reboot … is it a movie? I don’t know.”
Additionally, back in June 2020, it was revealed that a spinoff centred around Mitch and Cam had been discussed. This idea, inspired by creator Steven Levitan, unfortunately, didn’t progress and is no longer moving forward. Nevertheless, Ferguson confirmed in June 2022 that scripts exist for the Cam and Mitch spinoff.
And now with the 15th anniversary approaching, there is speculation that the teased Modern Family project could potentially be an on-screen reunion. ABC might be interested in celebrating the success of one of its beloved sitcoms on such a significant occasion. If a scripted follow-up does happen, there are good possibilities for the story to explore, whether it focuses on a spinoff or a reboot centred around the younger characters.

Series creator Steven Levitan first cast doubt on the possibility of a reboot. Levitan candidly addressed the possibility of bringing back Modern Family with the main cast while discussing his short-lived Hulu comedy Reboot. Acknowledging how grateful he was for the experience, he indicated that the hit comedy show had its time. He struck a similar note to others associated with the Emmy-winning comedy, underlining a reluctance to revisit the story. He has stated he was happy with how the series turned out.
Nolan Gould, who played Luke Dunphy, also said he’d love to come back to work with his co-stars. He mentioned to Us Weekly that he would “jump at the chance” to return to the series.
Ed O’Neil, aka Jay Pritchett, has discussed the possibility of a reunion, too. Though he hasn’t explicitly said no, he isn’t as open as some of the other cast members. However, O’Neil in a May 2024 Collider interview said that if everyone else wanted to return, he “wouldn’t be the guy” to say no.
Sofía Vergara, who shot to fame as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the show said that she would be open to it, but pointed out that it’s only been four years since the show ended, which doesn’t feel like enough time to bring it back, as reported by MovieWeb.
