Outsiders season 3 never happened despite the first two seasons making for tense, gritty television with great performances. The series aired on the now-defunct WGN America and followed the conflict between a clan of outsiders living in the Appalachian Mountains and the locals of a small town in Kentucky. The Farrell clan made themselves outcasts from society for centuries, and the show opens with one family member (Joe Anderson's Asa Farrell) returning after taking time away to serve in the military.
It turns out a company wants to evict the clan so they can start mining operations on the mountain, which soon leads to a bloody conflict with the town that keeps escalating followed by tension and power struggles within the family itself. Outsiders received solid reviews, including praise for its cast, headlined by David Morse (World War Z), tense atmosphere, and some shocking twists, including the possible death of a major character in the second season. The show's unique tone and characters earned it a fanbase, but Outsiders season 3 never happened.

WGN America Canceled Outsiders
The Drama Series Lasted For 2 Seasons
Outsiders | 2016-2017 |
---|---|
Season 1 | January 26, 2016 - April 19, 2016 |
Season 2 | January 24, 2017 - April 25, 2017 |
After a successful first season in 2016, WGN America renewed the show for a second season, which arrived in 2017. The second season of Outsiders ended on several cliffhangers, including the fate of Hasil (Kyle Gallner) up in the air after he took a bullet to the stomach. However, the network canceled Outsiders shortly before the season 2 finale. Despite receiving decent ratings and work already starting on scripts for season 3, WGN America decided to focus on other projects. The network itself ended just three years later.
Outsiders showrunner Peter Mattei produced the 2023 podcast series Sonarius: the Mysteries of M.
Could Outsiders Season 3 Appear On Another Network?
WGN America Shut Down Just A Few Years Later
Fans quickly took to social media to rally behind Outsiders. Creator Peter Mattei said they were seeking a new home after the show's cancellation. "Unfortunately, it's not really up to me to generate that news," Mattei said in 2017. "I wish I could. We're still looking for another home, but that's still in process" (via Yahoo). With no movement in the following years, Outsiders season 3 never found a home and is over.
What Would Have Happened In Outsiders Season 3?
Peter Mattei Teases A Waco-Styled Future
The Outsiders season 2 finale also served as a finale for the entire series and left behind several unresolved questions. The Farrell clan was infighting over the lack of a true leader, and the fate of Kyle Gallner's Hasil remains unresolved, with the family assuming he died (G'Win said as much). Outsiders season 3 would have revealed Hasil's fate, with Little Foster deciding if he wanted to step up and lead the clan - or if he wanted to leave with G'Win and raise their child in peace.
Creator Mattei also suggested that the struggle between the family and the town would eventually lead to a Waco-style standoff.
"What we're kind of looking at is, is the story heading toward a sort of Waco showdown? Or you could also look at it as a Standing Rock kind of showdown... That sort of conflict is inherent in the show, and I really, really, really hope that we find a new home for it so we can continue telling that story."

What The Outsiders Cast Has Done Since The Show Ended
David Morse, Ryan Hurst, & More
Before he ever appeared in Outsiders, David Morse was a star. He had important roles in everything from St. Elsewhere and The Green Mile to The Rock and 12 Monkeys. Since Outsiders, his movie career hasn't been as big, with his biggest films being Thank You For Your Service and Slender Man. On TV, he moved on to roles in Blindspot, The Chair, and in 2023, starred in The Last Thing He Told Me.
Hurst appeared in the movie A Million Little Pieces and joined The Walking Dead as Beta.
Ryan Hurst made his name in Sons of Anarchy before joining Outsiders, and this has followed him throughout his career as he seems typecast in these sorts of roles. When this show ended, Hurst appeared in the movie A Million Little Pieces and joined The Walking Dead as Beta. He most recently appeared in Paradise City and The Mysterious Benedict Society.
Joe Anderson (Asa) went on to appear in The Devil Conspiracy and The Last Front and appeared in a 2024 episode of Doctor Who ("Boom"). Gillian Alexy (G'Win) only appeared in small roles in shows like Dirty John and The Blacklist. Kyle Gallner (Hasil) had big roles in Scream and Smile and starred in the CBS All Access series Interrogation. Thomas M. Wright (Sheriff Houghton) appeared in The Stranger, Sleeping Dogs, and Barkskins after Outsiders.
