FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 2006 THE GREENVILLE NEWS Obituaries Rev. Frank Chong Ling, pastor, civic leader, listed in 'Who's Who' MONCKS CORNER One Man's Journey: Called by God. The Reverend Frank Shang Chong Ling, of 1223 Dennis Moncks Corner, S.C., died March 29, 2006, at Roper Hospital, Charleston, S.C. Born on Dec. 24, 1920, in Hankow, China, Reverend Ling was the oldest the late Dr.

Tsoren Lee Ling and Mrs. Shuching Chao Ling. Reverend Ling was raised on the campus of the University of Shanghai, Shanghai, China. salvation was, ultimately, a direct product of Baptist mission work in China through Miss Lottie Moon. Reverend Ling received a BS in chemistry from the University of Shanghai in May 1942.

With his father's blessings, Frank escaped on May 23, 1949, on the last plane to leave China before the communist takeover of the country. Reverend Ling graduated from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned a master of divinity in 1952 and a master of religious education in 1953. Upon graduation, Reverend Ling was ordained into the Gospel ministry on March 21, 1954, and worked for Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton, S.C., while serving as interim pastor of First Baptist Church of Hampton, S.C. In 1954, Reverend Ling accepted a call to Nixville Baptist Church, Nixville, S.C., where he served from 1954- 1965. In 1965, he accepted a call as associate pastor at Park Baptist Church in Rock Hill, S.C.

Reverend Ling served there from 1965-1967, when he accepted the call to return to Hampton, S.C., to serve as associate pastor at First Baptist Church, Hampton, S.C. Reverend Ling's time of service in Hampton concluded when he accepted the call to serve as associate pastor at First Baptist Church, Moncks Corner, S.C. Reverend Ling served in this capacity from 1970-1981, when he assumed the role of associate pastor in charge of ministry to senior adults, the first full-time minister to senior adults in the state of South Carolina. Reverend Ling faithfully served the Lord as a minister of the Gospel for 37 years. However, he remained active in his ministry long after his official retirement in 1990, serving as ombudsman for the state of South Carolina to Berkeley Manor, acting as chaplain and teaching Sunday school for the Senior Adult Ladies Class at First Baptist Church, Moncks Corner.

Reverend Ling became a naturalized citizen of the United States on June 6, 1962. Reverend Ling demonstrated a fierce love of country. He spoke fervently of his firsthand knowledge of the devastation wrought by communism in his native land, and he reminded congregations and audiences around the world of the abundant freedoms afforded Americans by a democratic government. In the July 1966 edition of The Progressive Farmer, Reverend Ling wrote: "All over the world free men are not necessarily equal, and equal men are not necessarily free. In the Communist world, men are equal: but they are all subservient to the state.

They are not free. Under our Constitution, the force of any man, or of any group, is carefully governed by laws, and men are not intended to be superior to such laws no one man; no group of men. This is one good reason why I am proud to be an American citizen." During his full and meaningful life, Reverend Ling received numerous honors and awards. In 1963, he was awarded the Rural Minister of the Year Award by The Progressive Farmer magazine and the Candler School of Theology of Emory University, Atlanta, Ga. Reverend Ling was honored by the American Legion, Post 26, Aiken, S.C., with the Citation for Meritorious Service on Dec.

17, 1964. In 1984, Reverend Ling received the Silver Beaver Award, highest award given by the Boy Scouts of America.
